Why Did the Gemini Cloth Choose Deutoros, and Why Did He Refuse It?

The Enigmatic Choice of the Gemini Gold Cloth

In the rich tapestry of Saint Seiya lore, few stories are as poignant and layered as that of Deutoros, the shadow twin of the Gemini Gold Saint. With his crimson eyes, dark complexion, vampire-like fangs, and flowing hair, Deutoros cuts a figure both fearsome and tragic. The Gemini constellation has always been unique among the zodiac signs—its legacy is one of duality, conflict, and profound emotional depth.

The Burden of the Gemini Legacy

From the outset, the Gemini Gold Saints are destined for a path marked by contrast. Historically, two candidates embody the sign’s dual nature, but only one can claim the Gold Cloth. The other is cast into obscurity, a fate Deutoros knew all too well. Born under the ominous label of a “malefic star,” he lived in the shadow of his brother, Aspros, who was celebrated as a “benevolent star” and the pride of Sanctuary.

Aspros, groomed for greatness, represented light and order, while Deutoros dwelled in darkness, shunned and misunderstood. Yet, despite this, Aspros never abandoned his brother. In a defining childhood moment, Aspros risked everything to save Deutoros from a life-threatening illness, declaring, “I didn’t strive to become a Gold Saint for my own sake. Without you, I have no reason to wear this cloth.” These words would echo through Deutoros’s life, shaping his loyalty and his pain.

The Turning Point: A Brother’s Fall from Grace

The fragile balance between the brothers shattered when Deutoros witnessed Aspros discarding a priestess’s body into another dimension. Horrified, he confronted his brother, only to be gaslit and told to remain a silent shadow. This incident marked the beginning of Aspros’s descent into darkness, as his ambition to become Pope twisted his morals.

It was through the eyes of an outsider, the Aquarius Gold Saint Degel, that Deutoros’s true character came to light. Initially suspecting Deutoros of the crime, Degel soon recognized his integrity and compassion, especially during their battle against the berserker, Koga. When the Gemini Cloth miraculously crossed dimensions to choose Deutoros as its bearer, it seemed like destiny’s redemption—but Deutoros shockingly returned it to Aspros.

Why Refuse the Honor?

1. Unbreakable Bond and Self-Sacrifice

Deutoros’s refusal was rooted in his profound love for his brother. Aspros had sacrificed too much for him, and the Gold Cloth symbolized Aspros’s lifelong dream. To accept it would feel like a betrayal of that bond. Deutoros would rather remain in the shadows than usurp the legacy his brother had earned through years of struggle.

2. Forging His Own Path

Deutoros realized that blindly following Aspros had led them both astray. By mastering techniques like Galaxian Explosion and Another Dimension, he proved his strength wasn’t derivative—it was earned. He chose to walk a solitary road, free from his brother’s shadow, to one day save Aspros from his own darkness.

3. Trusting Fate’s Design

In returning the cloth, Deutoros demonstrated a wisdom beyond his years. He understood that true strength isn’t bestowed by a relic but cultivated within. He believed fate would call upon him when the time was right—and it did. Years later, during the Holy War, he embraced the Gemini Cloth not as a prize, but as a tool to honor his brother’s memory and redeem their shared legacy.

The Redemption of a Gemini

Deutoros’s journey is a testament to the Gemini spirit—complex, resilient, and endlessly evolving. His story reminds us that our choices define us more than our destinies. In the end, both brothers embodied the light and shadow of Gemini, proving that true strength lies in balance, forgiveness, and the courage to choose one’s own path.
