The Fateful Choices of Gemini Saints and Aspros’ Path to Redemption

The Destiny and Background of Gemini Saints

In Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas, creator Teshirogi Masami masterfully portrays the intense battle between twin brothers – the of Thanatos and Hypnos by Hakurei and Sage stands as one of the series’ most brilliant moments. Yet the fate of another set of twins, Gemini Gold Saints Aspros and Defteros, presents an even more profound narrative. Their tragic story captivates readers, while Aspros’ ultimate choice to slay a god and achieve redemption creates a powerful, meaningful conclusion to his character arc.

Greek Mythological Origins

The intertwined destinies of Gemini Gold Saints Aspros and Defteros in The Lost Canvas echo the tragic grandeur of Saga and Kanon’s story. Tracing back to Greek mythology, we find the origin in Zeus’ transformation into a swan to approach Leda, Queen of Sparta. From their union came two eggs that hatched two sets of twins – Helen and Polydeuces, Castor and Clytemnestra according to most versions. Polydeuces, being divine as Zeus’ son, shared an unbreakable bond with his mortal brother Castor. When Castor died, Polydeuces shared his immortality with his brother, though they would alternate between Olympus and Hades every other day. This mythological foundation directly inspires the Gemini Saints’ narrative throughout the Saint Seiya universe.

Signature Techniques and Destinies

Genrōmaōken (Illusion Demon Imperial Fist) stands as the signature technique of Gemini Gold Saints. This spiritually-powered attack doesn’t cause physical damage but penetrates the opponent’s mind to create powerful illusions or establish mental control, trapping enemies in psychological warfare.

Another Dimension represents the spatial manipulation capabilities of Gemini Saints, allowing them to open portals to other dimensions. Aspros advanced this technique further by developing God’s Passage, a portal so powerful that mortal bodies cannot withstand its energy – those who touch it face certain destruction.

Additionally, Galaxian Explosion serves as the Gemini Saints’ ultimate physical attack, capable of annihilating opponents with cosmic energy. Aspros also developed his unique technique, Geminka Arc, which creates a powerful magnetic field that pulls opponents in and crushes them completely.

Aspros’ Redemption and Choices

The Tangled Web of Fate

The destinies of Gemini brothers Aspros and Defteros remain inextricably linked throughout The Lost Canvas. From childhood, Aspros was celebrated as a “lucky star” while his brother Defteros was labeled an “unlucky star.” Despite their contrasting reputations, Aspros consistently protected his brother, hoping to gain acceptance for him within their society. His ambition to become Pope stemmed partly from his desire to legitimize his brother’s place in the world.

When Aspros discovered that Defteros had reached comparable power levels without formal training, his perspective shifted dramatically. This transformation resulted both from evil thoughts planted by the time god Kagami and from pre-existing darkness within Aspros himself that Kagami exploited.

The Final Battle with the Time God

Upon learning that Sagittarius Gold Saint Sisyphus would become the next Pope instead of him, Aspros attempted to assassinate the current Pope, Sage. Unknown to Aspros, Sisyphus had actually withdrawn from consideration, and the entire situation was a test of Aspros’ character. When Aspros tried to use Genrōmaōken to manipulate his brother into killing Sage, his scheme was uncovered. Defteros ultimately killed his brother, though Aspros never acknowledged defeat, even casting Genrōmaōken on himself before dying.

During the Holy War, Aspros was resurrected under Hades’ power, while his brother – the new Gemini Saint – sacrificed himself to awaken the dormant Aspros. This awakening marked the beginning of Aspros’ path to redemption.

Awakening After the Holy War

Upon awakening, Aspros gradually uncovered the truth that his conflict with his brother had been orchestrated by the time god Kagami. Consumed by regret, guilt, and rage, he vowed to challenge the gods themselves, seeking redemption through deicide!

Aspros’ battle against Kagami became a spectacular confrontation of wits and power. To counter Kagami’s time-stopping ability, Aspros cleverly separated their battlefield into a different dimension, moving at light speed through Another Dimension to create a space where time couldn’t function normally.

Within this dimensional battlefield, Kagami’s life regression ability – which could reverse an opponent’s biological time to its initial state – initially overwhelmed Aspros. However, using the immortal body granted by Hades, Aspros resisted Kagami’s temporal attacks.

In a brilliant countermove, Aspros used prayer beads to suppress Kagami’s demon star and pull the god’s spirit back into his mortal body. With tremendous effort, he then opened the God’s Passage – a portal only deities should traverse. At the cost of his right arm’s destruction, Aspros forced Kagami into this portal. The time god’s mortal body was obliterated within the passage while his soul was sealed by the prayer beads.

Legacy of Redemption

After successfully defeating the time god, Aspros demonstrated strategic brilliance and determination rivaling even Hakurei and Sage. In this moment, he embodied the combined light and shadow of both Gemini brothers. His actions not only saved Shion but significantly influenced both the current and future Holy Wars.

Most remarkably, Aspros fought not for any god, but purely for himself – without regret or apology. In his eyes, gods like Kagami, Athena, and Hades were merely manipulative beings who toyed with human hearts. Throughout the entire Saint Seiya series, only Aspros demonstrates this level of awakening and rebellion. This perspective echoes Seiya’s declaration in Saint Seiya: Tenkai-hen Josō: “How can gods who don’t love humans be called gods? I will never acknowledge such gods!”

Athena’s assessment of Aspros carries particular depth: “You are neither good nor evil – you’re just an ordinary person, trying to live your life to the fullest.” Teshirogi Masami’s characterization of Aspros equals – and in some ways surpasses – the depth given to Saga in the original series, elevating the Gemini narrative while creating a compelling parallel universe counterpart to the classic character.

The story of Aspros represents one of the most sophisticated character arcs in the Saint Seiya universe, exploring themes of brotherhood, ambition, manipulation, and ultimately redemption through self-determined action. His journey from golden child to fallen saint to god-slayer demonstrates the complex morality that makes the Gemini Saints so compelling to audiences worldwide.
