Gemini Brothers: A Journey from Classic to Tragic Fate

The Role of Gemini Brothers in the Saint Seiya Series
The Saint Seiya series features numerous Gemini characters, a creative approach that has proven to be remarkably clever in literary terms. Among them, the portrayal of the Gemini brothers Saga and Kanon stands as a classic masterpiece. Their storyline spans the Sanctuary, Poseidon, and Hades arcs, adding profound emotional depth to the entire series.
Saga and Kanon’s Storyline
In the Saint Seiya universe, Saga and Kanon are not confined to a single installment but serve as iconic emotional anchors across multiple story arcs. Their narrative not only enriches the worldview of Saint Seiya but has also earned the affection of countless fans worldwide.
Gemini Characters in Other Works
This character setup has had a lasting impact throughout the Saint Seiya franchise. Beyond Saga and Kanon, other works like The Lost Canvas and Saint Seiya Ω have also created memorable Gemini characters. For instance, in Next Dimension, Cain and Abel as previous Gemini Gold Saints left equally powerful impressions. Masami Kurumada’s The Lost Canvas depicts the profound brotherly bond between Aspros and Defteros. Additionally, Saint Seiya Ω introduces twin Gemini female characters, while Toei’s original Asgard arc presents the twin brothers Syd and Bud, whose story proves equally captivating.
The Brotherhood and Fate of Syd and Bud
The story of Syd and Bud centers on themes of responsibility, sacrifice, and brotherhood, brimming with complex emotions. Syd, the younger brother, comes from a noble family in Asgard, yet his and his brother Bud’s birth was accompanied by ominous signs. In ancient times, twins were often considered unlucky omens, a belief rooted in deep social traditions. Consequently, their parents faced a heartbreaking choice, ultimately keeping Syd while abandoning Bud. Syd became the Black Ullr God Warrior, bearing family expectations and responsibilities, while Bud became the White Ullr God Warrior, serving as his brother’s supporting star.
Despite Bud possessing far greater combat prowess than his brother—he once admitted that confronting Taurus Aldebaran directly would result in mutual destruction, demonstrating at least mid-level Gold Saint capabilities—he never obtained the Odin Sapphire and thus couldn’t be considered a true God Warrior. During Asgard’s defense battle, Syd engaged in fierce combat with Shun. Although he successfully shattered Shun’s Nebula Chain, after losing his own chain sickle, Shun unleashed a powerful Nebula Storm that brought Syd to the brink of death.
Subsequently, Ikki and Shun also battled Bud. Though Bud displayed tremendous power, Phoenix Ikki’s insight into his true inner thoughts caused Bud to lose his will to fight. In his final moments, Syd begged Bud to kill them both, a decision that finally resolved the turmoil in Bud’s heart. He tenderly carried his brother’s body and quietly departed, with the anime’s final shot showing Bud collapsing in the endless snow while holding his brother, their fate left unknown.
This segment’s portrayal of brotherhood is exceptionally moving, standing equal to any other twin narrative within the Saint Seiya series. The Gemini archetype throughout the franchise consistently explores the duality of human nature—the constant tension between light and darkness, duty and desire, and the unbreakable bonds that transcend even death itself.
